An exterior detail is a hand wash done slowly, with the inner rims and the door jambs included. We do it where the car is parked, and you know the price before anyone comes.

When the outside needs it

  • Brake dust caked on the wheels, darkest on the front pair
  • Bird droppings or tree sap that have sat on the paint for days
  • Bugs and road tar across the front bumper and the mirrors
  • Gray grime in the door jambs that marks your clothes as you get in
  • A film of dust and pollen after a few dry weeks parked outside

The exterior list

  • Foam pre-wash, then a two-bucket hand wash
  • Inner rims brushed between the spokes
  • Tires cleaned and dressed
  • Door jambs and hinges wiped
  • Bugs, tar and bird droppings lifted
  • Hand dried with microfiber, outside glass cleaned

The foam goes on first and sits for a few minutes, so grit loosens before a wash mitt touches the paint. One bucket holds the soap and the other rinses the mitt between panels, so dirt from the lower doors isn't dragged across the hood.

Sap and bird droppings

In the sun, droppings and sap bake onto the paint, and left long enough they can etch the clear coat, so they are best lifted early. Lifting them is on the exterior list. Where they have bonded, the extra is a clay bar: a soft bar of detailing clay glided over the wet paint to pull out what the wash leaves behind. It adds 45 minutes, and you see it with the price before you say yes.

A mark already etched into the clear coat needs a polish, and paint correction is work we don't do. If your photos show one, we say so with the price.

On the day

  1. Tell us the car and where it will be. On the street, it needs a legal spot for the whole visit, clear of street sweeping.
  2. You have the price in writing within 1 hour, any day but Sunday, 8 am to 6 pm.
  3. Pick a day and a start time. We confirm it by text, and text again the evening before. Rain in the forecast for your day? You're moved to the next open day at no charge.
  4. Be there at the start, and at the end for the walk-around. In between, go about your day.

Size first, then any extras

Your car's size sets it. Anything extra goes on its own line with its time, and only when you say yes.

  • 2 rows (sedans, coupes, small SUVs): about 3 hours at your car
  • 3 rows (minivans, large SUVs): 3 to 4 hours
  • Pickups and vans: 3 to 4 hours
  • Clay bar on bonded sap or droppings: adds 45 minutes
  • Cloudy headlights restored: adds 60 minutes
  • Engine bay wiped down: adds 45 minutes

At the walk-around

The outside washed and dried by hand, with the wheels and the jambs done, checked against the list on a walk-around before you pay. The figure in our reply is the figure you pay, and no card is needed up front.

Exterior detailing questions

Does it include wax?

Spray wax comes with inside and out, put on after drying. The exterior detail on its own ends at the hand dry and the glass.

Will it take out scratches?

No. We clean the paint around a scratch. One that catches a fingernail needs paint work, which we don't do.

Can you do it in an apartment garage?

Tell us it's a building garage when you request a time. We need the space beside the car and the building's OK. If the spot won't work, we say so when we confirm, before you pay anything.
